Welcome to Second Mile!

Jesus said to go two miles when forced to go only one. He must have known something about that extra distance. Is that where life—the life of a servant—truly begins? No longer bored and tired, plain and dull? This is where we leave the safety of our buildings and go out into the messy world. We discover lives of fresh, free-flowing freedom, red-faced passion, blood and beauty, blatant sacrifice, and wild, dangerous action. Here is where our hands get dirty and our feet scarred, when we go beyond ordinary and inhabit the second mile.

Hospitality

Hospitality doesn't just mean having family members or friends sleep on your couch for a few nights, or giving some change to the homeless while you walk to your car in the grocery store parking lot. It means asking questions about your eating and drinking, looking at who you know and why, hanging out for a reason, building a budget that plans for other people, and committing to your community.

Over the summer, Second Mile is going to focus on hospitality, or "the friendly reception and treatment of guests or strangers." Chad's messages will look at what the Bible says about welcoming other people into our houses and lives, and what we can do to set up our lives to embrace the people we come in contact with, whether we know them or not.

A report from abroad

Eric and his wife Dejah are part of Second Mile. Eric is currently spending the summer in Guatemala teaching English and doing some research and has been posting some thoughts on a blog that correspond beautifully with our new message series Hospitality. Here's a sample worth checking out.

Oops!

The battery died in our recorder about four minutes before the message was over on Sunday night (06/07/2009). We apologize that the podcast is missing the last several sentences and closing prayer.

News about our website

We recently acquired a new webmaster and have some big plans in the works for this website. It may take a little time to accomplish, but we hope to have a new and even better site up and running during Summer 2009.

While we're updating our website, we're posting all events--art shows, women's nights, prayer gatherings, and more--to our Second Mile Facebook group page. If you're on Facebook, join the group to receive community-wide updates and messages.

Gathering

Our Sunday evening gatherings are where we come together to delve into the Bible to discuss the character of God, the person of Jesus, and how we are to live as disciples.
