Small Groups
The world we live in is full of distractions, and the lives we lead are not neat and scripted. To do more in life than just survive and move on to the next day, Second Mile knows that people need two things: Jesus, and the support of other people. God created us to be in relationship with him. As satisfying as this connection can be, the story of creation points to a God who understands community and knows that true joy will only come through life shared with others. We meet in coffeehouses, restaurants, and parks. We set up dinner tables and living rooms in our homes with the intention of gathering there with our friends, our family. All of us are hungry for a comfortable, safe place to share our thoughts. We long for people in our lives who truly understand the core of who we are, and who give us the freedom to be that person.
This type of human connection has been an essential part of the local church since it began (Acts 2:42–47They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.Acts 2:42–47). Small groups move us past mere opinions and launch us toward a deeper understanding of the Bible, of God, and of where our lives are going. They give us that safe place to work through the pain, confusion, and brokenness of life and experience the joy, passion, and fulfillment found in Jesus. It is only through a persistent, supported walk with Christ that we will be able to focus on God’s purpose for us while balancing all that life requires. Small groups give people the opportunity to engage with others and join God’s agenda together. The prayer of Second Mile is that the nurturing environment of small groups will help you develop the intimacy needed to keep yourself and others accountable for personal growth, spiritual enrichment, and daily missional living Every believer must embrace God’s global agenda. God is passionate about proclaiming his worth and redeeming a people for himself through the life, death, and resurrection of his son, Jesus. As followers of Jesus we are sent on this mission by God just as Jesus was sent on his mission (John 17:14–16,18; 20:21). The culture around us sees the church as weak and irrelevant. As Christians we have all been sent by God to go into our own city and communities as people on mission. We are to be culturally entrenched and personally involved. We must share the beauty of life transformation through Jesus to a generation that has been blinded by their own self interests.
Second Mile understands that our small groups are a work in progress. We firmly believe that the above description of life in small groups can be experienced. We also realize people are complicated and that community and connection are not always easily attained. We ask that you join us in prayer. Pray that God would move through our community, connecting our diversity with his mission.
