A New Season of Ministry

Second Mile has been on a tremendous journey over the past three years. The question that has been on the forefront of our minds as a community is, “God, what would you have us do next?” It has been a question that seems so simplistic yet, if given serious consideration, it is one of the most complex realities in effectively reaching people with a healthy expression of the body of Christ.
We as a community have matured when it comes to understanding our complex city. Tucson is as diverse as the desert in which it resides. God has continued to build within our DNA the longing to be a city church. We strongly desire to strategically affect each subculture that makes up this great multi-dimensional city. In order to be faithful in this tremendous endeavor we continue to ask God to bring us leaders who are passionate about a specific sub culture. Effective ministry will be birthed from gifted leaders and their passion for a particular people. One of the largest sub cultures in Tucson is university students. The University of Arizona has a student population of 34,491 and faculty and staff comprise another 14,466. In addition to the U of A, Tucson is also the home of Pima Community College which consists of six different campuses and over 74,000 students. Second Mile is confident that God is asking us to impact the hearts and minds of college students. We must engage this sub culture if we want the city of Tucson to experience significant community transformation.
God has heard and answered our prayers. Starting in January of 2008, Julie Evans will join our staff as Collegiate Strategist for the city of Tucson. This step in obedience will not be without sacrifice. Along with the support she receives from Second Mile, it will be necessary for her to raise additional funds. Raising support has always been a part of Julie’s ministry and we are excited to join her in faith with this endeavor. Julie attended Pima Community College and graduated from the University of Arizona. She has also received her MDiv. degree from Golden Gate Theological Seminary and has been directly involved in college ministry over the past ten years. Julie is a local and has a huge heart for her hometown. Her experience and seasoned leadership will be essential in moving the local church to reach, disciple, and mobilize college students for the glory of God and the expansion of his Kingdom.
